2005 Rolex Monterey Historics (Chaparral Tribute) : Laguna Seca is the host circuit for the annual Monterey Historics event. In 2005 the event honored the 'Great American Road Racing Specials". Chief among these were all of Jim Hall's Chaparrals. It was an incredible experience to be up close to these white, winged wonders, and to see them once again at speed.

2004 Chaparral Gallery Opening : We have been fans of Jim Hall's Chaparrals since our teens. (The 2E / 2G are at the top of our favorite race cars of all time list.) The Petroleum Museum in Midland, Texas added a whole new wing to house Hall's creations and thus preserve them for all time. The gallery opened in April of 2004 and we were there to photograph both the gallery and the Chaparral Cars compound. We watched Jim fire up the 2F model and, escorted by Texas State Police, drive it out of the compound to deliver it in person to the gallery. For us, this weekend was akin to realizing the dream of arriving in heaven! Hey, almost everything was a heavenly white anyway! :)

2007 Rolex 24 Hours At Daytona : Daytona International Speedway may not offer the same traditional ambience of a true road course, but it is a place filled with sportscar history and so very many racing greats have run in the Rolex 24. If you have never been to Daytona for the Rolex 24 Hours, you have to make plans to go!

My name is Andy Hartwell (aka: ash) . I write a column called "Through The Esses" which appears on TheRaceSite.com. I have been a photographer and sportscar racing journalist for a good number of years now, having had my work published in All-Race, Octane, Automobile, and Race News magazines. My work has also appeared in race programs, books, magazines and print ads.

I focus my writing efforts primarily on the people 'who make the cars go", driving or working in series from the old Can-Am and USRRC days to the modern combatants in Grand-Am, ALMS, SPEED World Challenge, KONI Challenge and Vintage Racing. I also serve as the Newsletter Editor for the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) and I am the owner and Senior Editor of ashautomobilia.com.
